Jobs up for grabs in oil and gas industry

HOUSTON

More workers are needed, and they are going to be needed for years to come. Wer'e talking a million more jobs in the next few years. Here's how to get them.

Eagle Ford Shale Play is one of the largest oil and gas development fields in the world. It has already brought hundreds of thousands of jobs to Texas and more are needed.

"You are talking tens of thousands of jobs, with absolutely no doubt," David Spencer-Percival with Spencer Ogden said.

Spencer knows first-hand about the number of jobs needed. He is a recruiter in the oil and gas industry.

"You are at the start of this shale boom now in America, so it has a lot of legs and a lot of capacity to hire a lot of people," Spencer said.

For those looking to start in a career, Spencer says getting a background in engineering, geology or geoscience can help lock in a career.

He says recruiters can match you with right job. If you don't have a degree in engineering, don't worry.

"If you build a power station, you need 10,000 people to build a power station. Seven or 8,000 are construction workers," he said.

Workers in human resources and accounting and electricians are also all in high demand.

A good way to get noticed is the social media site LinkedIn.

"I am hearing more and more and more hiring authorities and companies utilizing LinkedIn," said Bonnie Monych with Your Workplace Doctor.

Monych says signing up with LinkedIn costs nothing and if you know where to look, you can use it to find jobs.

"You want to check out the groups that are available within the oil and gas industry within your discipline," she said. "Join those groups."

Keep in mind a lot of these jobs require relocation, whether in Texas or out of state.
