The public was invited to a town hall meeting Saturday morning at Lakewood Church.
Police Chief Charles McClelland and his area commanders talked about their goals and answered questions from citizens.
The chief says controlling crime is a joint effort between police and the community.
"Police can't do it alone. Citizens can't do it alone. So this is a commitment about how we go forward and do a better job than we have done in the past," McClelland said.
McClelland also stepped into the gun control debate.
The department live-Tweeted about the town hall on Twitter. When the question was asked about gun control, HPD sent a Tweet stating gun control was an issue that must be addressed as a society.
McClelland said he would like to see background checks on all gun purchases, a limit on high-capacity magazines and a ban on armor-piercing rounds.
Concerning arming teachers in schools, McClelland said arming teachers was not the answer and he doesn't believe it would increase school safety.
