Wrecker driver, other bystanders rescue woman from burning car after 18-wheeler accident on East Freeway

HOUSTON

It happened around 3:30am in the 17100 block of the East Freeway at Magnolia

According to Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies, she was driving a red Honda Civic east on the East Freeway when she rear-ended a sedan.

The collision left her car in the middle of the freeway, facing the wrong direction. That's when she was hit by an 18-wheeler.

Officials said car immediately burst into flames, but a quick-thinking wrecker driver and other bystanders were there to help. They jumped into action, using fire extinguishers to keep the flames at bay while they pulled the woman from her burning car.

The woman, who is in her 20s, went to the hospital with minor burns.

The female driver of the sedan was transported with back pain. No one else was injured.

The eastbound main lanes of the East Freeway were closed for about three hours while HCSO investigated and cleared the scene.
