Teen's shooting caught on surveillance camera

HOUSTON

Dorainfante Lopez has been crying since Saturday night when police told the family that her 16-year-old daughter Iris was shot multiple times. The teen had been out to the movies with friends.

Police say Lopez and four other friends drove to a convenience store on Broadway near Winkler in South Houston at around 11:50pm Saturday. In the surveillance video, you can see two friends go inside and buy some beer.

But when they went back to the car, a man wearing a black shirt can be seen approaching the teen in white, taking the beer, while pointing a weapon at the teenager. Police say it was at this time a second suspect tried to rob the three teenage girls in the back seat.

"Apparently the females didn't open the door as fast as (the suspects) wanted it open, so at that point they fired three or four shots into the truck and only hit one female," said South Houston Police Department Chief Herbert Gilbert.

Lopez was the only person hit. The robbers fled and, as the surveillance video shows, the teens quickly drove away, taking their friend to a local hospital.

As the shooting unfolded, store owner Hugh Huynh was barricaded inside.

He recalled, "I just heard shoot something outside -- boom, boom, boom, that's it!"

For now, police have no suspects, while her father says Iris Lopez is recovering from four gunshot wounds, and the teen's little sister is hoping for her quick recovery.

"I want her to be OK," said Nayla Lopez. "She's my sister."

Iris remains in the hospital, surrounded by her family. As for the investigation, police are reviewing the video in the hopes gaining a better description of the suspects, which so far is only very vague.
