Wet weather can be a big mess, but if you live in League City, there is some good news: Your flood insurance premiums are going down.
If you live in League City and have flood insurance, your piece of mind just got a little cheaper. The city has improved its rating within the federal flood insurance program and that translates to saving money for homeowners.
"It basically allows them to have lower premiums on their flood insurance," League City Mayor Timothy Paulissen said.
To get the better rating, League City had to incorporate federal flood insurance guidelines in the city's codes, but that's not all.
"We have done a lot of drainage system maintenance. All those ditches out there that you see filled with water, that is the way they are supposed to act," said Debbie Vascik with the League City Flood Plain Management.
Officials also used federal money to raise houses that kept getting flooded over and over again.
"We have five actual houses in Clear Creek Village that we actually raised," Paulissen said.
League City residents in the flood plain will see a 20 percent discount, and those outside the flood plain will see their bills go down 10 percent.
"Right now it means a lot because Galveston County is getting new flood maps and more properties will be brought into the flood plain and those people if they have federally backed mortgages will have to buy flood insurance," Vascik said.
League City's improved rating went into effect in October, so residents can expect to see the discount the next time they pay the premiums.
While there are 20 cities in our area in the community rating system, it is voluntary. When a community makes improvements that battle flooding, the flood insurance rates in those cities goes down.
