Sheriff Walters died at the age of 66 Wednesday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer, according to his office. He had recently been elected to a second term.
One of Sheriff Walters' final wishes was for Chief Deputy Robert Long to continue leading the department, according to a press release.
Funeral arrangements are being made.
