Shortly before 6pm, Alvin police were called to a home in the 4700 block of Heathrow where a 13-year-old boy lived with his grandparents. The boy had been reportedly "playing with the gun" according to another child who was present at the time of the shooting. Police say the victim was apparently holding the gun when it discharged, striking him in the head.
The boy was treated by Alvin EMS and then flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
According to police the incident appears to have been a tragic accident, but is still under active investigation. When the detectives have completed their initial investigation, the case will be discussed with the Brazoria County District Attorney's Office to discuss whether the case should be pursued further.
