Three people arrested in death of 9-month-old girl

HOUSTON

Rona Landon, Jennifer H. Zarnfaller, and Vikas Sharma, all of Spring, were arrested around 6:30am by the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office, along with the U.S. Marshal's Gulf Coast Violent Offender task force. They were taken into custody without incident at a home in the 21000 block of Ironcrest.

All three are charged with Injury of a Child with Serious Bodily Injury, a first degree felony.

"The child had injuries and subsequently passed," Pct. 4 Assistant Chief Mark Herman said.

Authorities say they began to investigate the trio in July 2010, after the 9-month-old girl was taken to a north-side hospital and tests revealed a number of broken bones. She died at the hospital. Detectives are not revealing how or why the child might have sustained the injuries.

According to investigators, the 41-year-old Zarnfaller is the child's mother and Sharma is her 29-year-old live-in boyfriend. Landon is the child's 71-year-old grandmother. Each was indicted by a grand jury after failing to show up to testify.

"It's shocking, it's real shocking," neighbor Robert Aguilar said.

Neighbors say the three mostly kept to themselves.

"It's hard to know because you barely saw them outside. They were hardly ever outside," Aguilar said.

Aguilar and other neighbors now are mourning for a child who never got a chance to grow up, a little girl they didn't even know.

The three suspects are all held here at the Harris County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
