Landmark hotel imploded in downtown Houston

HOUSTON

The old Ben Milam Hotel -- right next to Minute Maid Park at the corner of Texas and Crawford -- was imploded around 12:40pm.

The 10-story building was demolished in anticipation of something "bigger and better." The Finger Company is set to develop the site into an upscale apartment complex.

It's all part of the city's effort to make downtown more residential.

The building was once used to serve travelers who arrived from Union Station across the street. It was built in 1926.

The developers said they considered saving it, but the structural elements wouldn't have worked for modern residential units.
