Harris County Sheriff's investigators have been canvassing the neighborhood near a field where the five-year-old girl was found safe Tuesday evening, in hopes someone saw the kidnapper dropping her off.
One of Esmeralda Olvera's sons saw something -- or rather, someone -- unusual, in the field across the street from their tire shop Tuesday night. The five-year-old girl was all alone. She'd been kidnapped from the Fairbanks library, two miles away down Gessner and dropped off by the kidnapper.
The girl had gone to the library with her mother and sister. The girls' mom was splitting her attention between the older sister on the computer and the five-year-old looking at books in the children's section.
"In one of those trips back and forth she suddenly came back ... and said my daughter, the five-year-old is gone," said Bruce Farrar with the Harris County Public Library.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the man lured the girl with an offer of candy.
Deputies interviewed the child and were told that she had been approached by a Hispanic man between the ages of 30 to 35 years old, with an average build, weighing around 180 pounds with a protruding stomach. He is described as 5'4 to 5'5 in height, and was wearing a black Chicago Bulls baseball hat and a dark colored workout jumpsuit or jogging suit.
Deputies say the man asked the girl if she wanted some candy and to follow him to where he had more candy. The suspect then led her to a dark colored, possibly brown, sedan and drove off with the child. He then let her out at the Tanner Road location. She was taken to Texas Children's Hospital for an evaluation.
There are no surveillance cameras at the Fairbanks branch library, but officials say the library will review its security policies. Parents are encouraged to discuss safety guidelines with their children, especially during Halloween trick or treating.
