Best places to find student clothes on a budget

Back to School means new school uniforms for most kids, but where's the best place to find quality clothes on a budget?

The best deals we found did not include any stops at the mall or a crowded discount store. Instead we ventured to stores off the beaten path to look for bargains.

Our first stop is the grocery store. Next to milk and eggs at Fiesta Mart you can find a massive supply of school uniforms, most discounted an additional 20 percent off.

Brenda Reyes is shopping for three kids.

"It's too expensive," Reyes said.

That's why she's avoiding the malls, hoping to avoid the big price tags, too. At Fiesta Mart, we found white kids polo shirts by Rockpoint for $5.99, and colored shirts for $8.99. Dickies khakis are priced at $16.99, and girls' skorts are priced from $9.99 to $10.99.

To get an even better deal, Fiesta is having their sidewalk sale this weekend just in time for the tax-free holiday weekend and school uniforms will be discounted even more.

"We are almost finished now," said shopper Lynn Evans.

Over at the Uniform Superstore in southeast Houston, for both boys and girls we found French Toast brand polos sized 4-14, priced at $4.99, and 16-20 sizes priced at $6.99.

We found the students here like the massive selection of colors and styles.

"I like shorts and skirts," said student Deja Sampson.

"Since I'm in 6th grade, we got to wear gray shirts and khaki bottoms," said student Devon Sampson.

Khaki cargo shorts for boys are priced for are $9.99. Skirts for girls in khaki or navy are $9.99.

"It's a real good price, real good price," said Evans.

Our last stop is at the home of Maria Wilson and her newly launched online business called Mike's Place Clothing Store.com, named after her 5-year-old son.

"We just started because my son just started to go to school and we paying so much money," Wilson told us.

She partnered with an wholesale distributor and now her garage is her warehouse...

"So we just decided to do an online store," she said.

Now Wilson is busy filling orders and getting them shipped. At MikesPlaceClothingStore.com we found the cheapest price on polos for $4.50 each. The sizes range from size 5/6 up to 18/20 on the Gilden brand shirts. Boys and girls' khaki pants are $8.25 each.

Girls' skorts are $7.75 and boys' cargo shorts are $8.25. The store is strictly online and shipping is not included.

Most of the prices we featured are rock bottom prices, so don't expect any additional savings for the tax-free weekend, but Fiesta is hosting their sidewalk sale with a focus on clothes.
