Houston soldier killed in Afghanistan

HOUSTON

Spc. Krystal M. Fitts died Tuesday from "injuries suffered from indirect fire," officials said.

Fitts, 26, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg.

She volunteered to serve on a Female Engagement Team and to learn Pashtu to help soldier communicate with the local Afghan population.

Fitts joined the Army in 2009 as a chemical operations specialist. This was her first deployment.

Her awards and commendations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
