Help name newborn giraffe at Houston Zoo

HOUSTON

A giraffe named Tyra delivered a male Masai calf shortly before 8pm Saturday at the McGovern Giraffe Exhibit at The African Forest.

"The calf weighs 73 kilos, about 160 pounds and is over 74 inches tall. He's a strong healthy baby," said Houston Zoo Hoofed Stock Supervisor John Register. "This is 14-year-old Tyra's seventh calf. The proud 'first time' father, Mtembei is five years old."

Now, the Houston Zoo is holding an online naming contest for the newest addition to the giraffe herd.

The Houston Zoo's herd of Masai giraffe now has grown to eight, five males and three females.
