Officer injured in gun accident at HPD Academy

HOUSTON

The accident happened at about 3:40pm Tuesday at the academy, located on Aldine Westfield and Rankin in northeast Houston. According to police, an HPD officer was at the firing range and was cleaning his service weapon. But a round remained in the gun, and while the officer was cleaning it, the gun went off.

The bullet hit the floor. A fragment of the bullet ricocheted, hitting the officer above an eyebrow. The wound was treated at the scene.

The officer's name has not been released.
