Dog owner arrested after pit bulls attack pony in Liberty County

HOUSTON

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office says the two dogs were loose on C.R. 676 when they began to attack a small Shetland pony tied to a steel post in a pasture. The pony sustained extensive damage to its body, legs and throat. Witnesses called 911 and deputies responded, saying they observed the dogs attacking the pony and the resident of the location standing on his porch and taking no action to stop it.

Deputies say only when they started to deploy deadly force did the owner of the dogs recall them off the pony. The owner, identified as Dever Lachain, was arrested for cruelty to animals and transported to the Liberty County Jail.

Both dogs were transported away from the scene and placed under quarantine at a Liberty County Veterinary Clinic by the contract livestock personnel.

The Liberty Co. Sheriff's Office says the incident remains under investigation.
