El Paso man pleads guilty in corruption case

EL PASO, TX

Prosecutors in El Paso say Ruben "Sonny" Garcia pleaded guilty Monday to fraud and to conspiracy to bribe a public official. Garcia, who's free pending sentencing next March, could testify against other defendants.

The El Paso man and his company, LKG Enterprises Inc., were paid to evaluate the Border Children's Mental Health Collaboration. Investigators say El Paso County was billed for work that wasn't done.

Former El Paso County Judge Dolores Briones in December pleaded guilty in the bribery investigation. Prosecutors say Garcia in 2006 paid bribes that included money reaching Briones.

Garcia faces as much as five years in prison and could be required to repay up to $800,000. LKG faces possible fines.
