Smash-and-grab robbers hit cell phone store

HOUSTON

It happened around 4am at the AT&T store location off the North Freeway near Crosstimbers.

Police say four men, believed to be between the ages of 18 and 25, backed a burgundy F-350 pickup truck into the store. The thieves were able to take off with some iPads and some pre-paid phones.

The store manager tells Eyewitness News the suspects while they may have gotten away with a couple thousand dollars worth of merchandise, the damage left behind is approximately more than $8,000.

"They didn't get real cell phones. They have the mini computers -- they only got two of those," said Richard Pederson with the Houston Police Department. "But they didn't get to the cell phones. The cell phones are so locked up so that they can't get to the cell phones."

Authorities say the vehicle should have major damage on the passenger side, specifically a bumper and the side mirror. The suspects remain on the loose.

The manager says he has already called a repair crew and expects to open for business today.
