The shooting happened around 6:50pm Tuesday in the 15800 block of Blue Ridge near West Fuqua.
About 30 minutes earlier, a man walking down Blue Ridge with his children was confronted by an armed suspect, Houston Police Department Spokesman Victor Senties said. The suspect pointed the gun at them and but kept walking. The father then flagged down the officer and told him of the encounter.
The reportedly soon spotted the suspect and ordered him to drop the weapon. The suspect refused and continued walking in a "threatening way" and then raised his gun at passing cars, Senties said. The officer once again demanded the suspect to drop his weapon. When he didn't, the officer discharged his own gun, shooting the suspect twice.
The 32-year-old suspect was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The officer was not injured.
The officer has been with HPD since June 2009. He is part of the Southwest Patrol Division. As is policy in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, this incident is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions.
