Texas interim homes for immigrant children close

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The Department of Health and Human Services says the site at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland shut down Wednesday with the last four children relocated.

Spokesman Kenneth Wolfe says HHS has opened new permanent, state-certified shelters and expanded existing facilities.

A dormitory at Lackland since April held up to 300 youngsters, part of an influx of children caught at the border with Mexico or in South Texas without their families. Wolfe says all of the shelters were closed in recent weeks.

The San Antonio Express-News reports HHS since October has seen 8,541 unaccompanied children, exceeding the total number in fiscal 2011.
