HPD: Hit-and-run driver causes chain-reaction crash

HOUSTON

It happened around 10:30pm Saturday on Bellfort at Scott on Houston's south side.

Witnesses say the driver of an SUV was speeding away from the scene of a different crash when he plowed into two cars that were waiting at a red light and bumped a third.

The force of the collision sent the cars flying into the intersection and caused the SUV to flip.

The driver of the SUV was trapped inside, but firefighters were able to save him by cutting into the vehicle.

In all, eight people were taken to the hospital. One of them was in critical condition, officials said.

According to police, the driver of the SUV did not appear to be under the influence.
