Child killed in car wreck in SE Houston

HOUSTON

The crash happened just before noon Friday near the intersection of East Edgebrook and Balcones.

The SUV finally came to rest near a tree. The impact was so hard it ejected three children and the driver from the truck. A nine-year-old boy died at the scene, and four-year-old twins both had broken bones.

The mother of the children says she was following behind them in her own car when it happened. It was her boyfriend who was driving the truck.

"A car came up and hit him, clipped the truck, made the truck flip," the mother said.

Police, though, believe it was a single-car accident and no other vehicle was invovled. Instead, investigators say they think speed was a factor.

"All of the people that have no interest in this case, witness-wise, have told us the only vehicle they saw was the one that was speeding and struck the tree," an officer at the scene told us.

The deceased child was identified as James Charles Phillips. An account has been setup to help the family with burial expenses. The fund is called James C. Phillips Memorial fund at Wells Fargo Bank. Donations accepted at any location.

Funeral services are pending Thursday at Praise Chapel Church on Highway 3 in Webster.
