A couple of thieves decided to break into a police car outside the Shepherd substation and ended up giving themselves away after accidentally hitting a switch in the car.

It happened at West 11th Street and Durham around 4am. Police were alerted after seeing lights go on and off. HPD says they saw the two men leaving in a Chevy Avalanche and Chevy Impala.

The officer chased the Impala until it crashed at 18th and the West Loop. A short while later, they found the Avalanche, but the suspect was gone.

Police say they recovered several items that were stolen from cars over the last few days.
