Sand castle competition held in Galveston

Architects, engineers and designers competed in Galveston on Saturday at the American Institute of Architects sand castle competition.

Sixty teams were battling for the Golden Bucket Award. The AIA Houston Chapter has been organizing this competition every year since 1986.

Firms began months in advance generating ideas, developing designs and assigning duties.

Teams stretched along East Beach beginning Saturday morning, meticulously sculpting their sand piles and working non-stop for five hours. Judges determined the winners based on originality, technical difficulty, carving techniques and artistic expression.
