Police: Man dies after being shot while driving near the Heights

HOUSTON

Police say when the driver pulled in the parking lot at the Colonial apartments around 3am Tuesday on North Durham near West 11th Street, he was approached by at least two shooters who fired multiple times at the victim's car.

The driver's side window was shot out and the victim had a single gunshot wound to his torso that travelled through his body to his right arm. He managed to drive out of the parking lot onto Durham in the wrong direction. When police arrived he was out of the car, lying on his back, still breathing but unresponsive.

The victim died on the way to Ben Taub Hospital.

Witnesses say they heard what was going on, but detectives are still piecing together exactly what happened.

"(I heard) some gunshots early morning and that's what woke me up, probably the third gunshot," said resident Deveneaux Hayes.

"We believe that the suspects shot from the outside of the vehicle into the vehicle. That's what we believe," said HPD Homicide Investigator Steve Straughter.

Police say they do not have any suspects or a motive in the shooting. The victim's identity hasn't been released.

Anyone with information on this case is being asked to call authorities.
