Driver dies in crash, vehicle fire on NW Fwy

HOUSTON

It happened around 8:45am. When Houston police and firefighters arrived, a pickup truck was in flames.

Police said the truck was inbound on Highway 290, traveling at a normal rate of speed, when the driver apparently decided to take the Mangum exit.

According to officials, he changed his mind at the last second and swerved back, losing control of the vehicle.

The truck hit a guardrail, spun out and was hit by another vehicle, causing the truck to lose a tire.

Firefighters worked to get the man out of the burning truck, but the flames kept them back.

Police said the driver was trapped and died at the scene. It is unclear whether the man was conscious and alert when the fire happened. No one else was in the vehicle with him.

A total of four vehicles were involved in the wreck; no one else was seriously injured.

The roadway was closed while authorities investigated and crews worked to clear the scene. It reopened around 12:30pm.
