Police say the driver of a white Honda was seen stealing tires at a residence in the Garden Oaks area shortly before 5am. Officers responded to the scene and began chasing the suspect.
Prior to officers catching up to the vehicle, the suspect apparently lost control and hit a pickup truck before slamming into the box truck. The 21-year-old male driver of the Honda died at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Both of the truck drivers appeared to be OK. Police say an investigation is ongoing.
All northbound lanes of Shepherd were closed from 610 North Loop to Durham due to the accident for several hours, but all lanes has since reopened.
