Fort Worth considers hiring ban on smokers

FORT WORTH, TX

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the city's human resources department is reviewing public and private tobacco-use policies and will report back to the City Council May 8.

Mayor Betsy Price tells the Star-Telegram the idea has appeal because of health benefits and lower health insurance costs.

But council members Frank Moss and Sal Espino express concern that the ban could limit the city's field of job applicants.

City officials say they haven't found any other cities that have such a ban, although many private employers do restrict hiring to nonsmokers.
