HISD to hold meetings to discuss new school schedules

HOUSTON

If this plan goes through, it would make each school day 19 minutes longer. Ultimately, that would add 7 full days of school to the school year.

They'd do it by coordinating the bell schedule at all HISD schools. Right now, HISD schools have about 20 different start and end times. The district says this move would also save them money; upwards of about $1 million because they could make the bus schedule more efficient.

Here's what the new schedule would look like:

  • About half of all elementary schools would operate from 7:30am to 3pm
  • The other half of elementary schools would operate from 8:30am to 4pm
  • All middle schools would operate from 7:45am to 3:15 pm
  • All high schools would operate from 8:45am to 4:15pm
  • Before any changes are made, HISD is asking parents to weigh in. They're holding 10 public meetings. Those meetings start tonight at 6pm at three locations.

  • Austin High School, 1700 Dumble
  • Bellaire High School, 5100 Maple Street
  • Chavez High School, 8501 Howard
  • If you can't get to a meeting there's also a survey you can fill out online. The district will present their plan to the board of education next month.
