Lightning strikes Sugar Land home's chimney

SUGAR LAND, TX

The lightning bolt hit the house on Ken Place at South Hall, and the homeowner was inside when it happened.

In the middle of her afternoon prayers, inside her home on a peaceful lake, Jyoti Shah got the scare of her life.

"All of a sudden, I heard a big sound," she said. "It was so scary at the time. I didn't know where it was coming from."

One loud boom followed by another. Lightning struck the family's chimneys, sending bricks crashing into the backyard deck.

Fearing a fire, Shah immediately got out. Fortunately, this was it.

"There was no fire. Thank God there was no fire and nobody got hurt," she said.

No injuries, no fire, but needed repairs. Shah's prayers for safety were answered. That hasn't been lost on friends and family.

"I'm here, standing alive," Shah said.

"Your son just said you should go buy a lottery ticket," we said.

"I think I'll take him up on that," she replied. "I feel really blessed today. I do, I feel lucky."

Shah and her husband expect an insurance claims adjuster to assess the damage at their home on Friday.
