Death of man in TX police custody ruled a homicide

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX

The case of 48-year-old Troy Stewart will be forwarded to a Nueces County grand jury. Corpus Christi police say no cause of death was released Thursday by the medical examiner's office.

Capt. Ed Shannon says the homicide ruling means the death was not natural. No one has been charged.

Investigators say officers on Feb. 12 responded to a home about a man having trouble breathing.

Police handcuffed Stewart, who allegedly had struggled with officers. Police say Stewart stopped breathing and the handcuffs were removed so CPR could be done. He died later at a hospital.

Two officers who restrained Stewart are on administrative duty with pay during the review.
