Final 'Welcome Home a Hero' crowd for DFW flight

GRAPEVINE, TX

Organizers say about 1,000 people were on hand Wednesday as the military's final rest-and-recuperation charter flight to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport arrived.

The volunteer program was started in 2004 to encourage and support deployed military personnel as they returned home for some time off. Officials say the end of the Iraq war and the drawdown of U.S. troops overseas led to an end for the DFW flights.

The group's website says as many as 275 troops had been traveling through the airport daily.
