Police say a passerby found the fingers in a trash bin at the Kukui Gardens Housing Complex in Liliha on Feb. 12. The fingers were inside a plastic bag, KHON-TV reported.
Laboratory tests determined they belonged to a child.
Honolulu CrimeStoppers Sgt. Kim Buffet was unable to say how many fingers were found or how long they'd been in the trash. But she told KITV that the fingers belonged to a child who was 10 years old or younger.
"I have not seen anything in my 25 years ... like this," Buffet said.
Police say the woman who discovered the fingers is not a suspect in the case. But after interviewing area residents and cross-checking missing person reports, investigators say they have hit a wall.
"We're really heavily relying on the public out there to come forward," Buffett told Hawaii News Now. "Somebody has to know something. I mean, it's not normal to find fingers in a Dumpster."
Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300. A reward of up to $1,000 is available for information that leads to the arrest of a suspect.
Meanwhile, Kukui Gardens residents say they are disturbed by the discovery.
Monimer Serna called it "scary," while neighbor Noelani Dilyard said hearing about the found fingers gave her "chicken skin."
"It's creepy. It really is," Dilyard told Hawaii News Now.
