USS Fort Worth to be commissioned in Galveston

GALVESTON, TX

A ceremony is planned Sept. 22 in Galveston to commission the USS Fort Worth.

The Galveston County Daily News reports a delegation from Fort Worth visited the island Friday to work on details. The ceremony is planned at Pier 21.

Officials say the littoral combat ship is being built by Marinette Marine Corporation of Marinette, Wis., and is expected to be accepted by the Navy in May. The ship should arrive in Galveston by Sept. 14.

Littoral combat ships are designed to support combat operations in coastal waters.

Marinette is on Lake Michigan and is located about 60 miles north of Green Bay, Wis.
