The crash happened around 1:20am on the feeder of the Gulf Freeway near Broadway. Police say two women had just left a downtown Houston club and were heading outbound on the highway when an HPD officer spotted their red Suburban driving with a flat tire.
"The driver was driving on three tires. One tire was already flat and the driver almost hit the officer, who was running traffic enforcement," Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith said.
The officer said he followed the driver, who took the Woodridge exit, in an attempt to get her to stop.
"She only had three good tires, and she was also stopping and starting several times along the way, so every time the officer would think the pursuit was going to end and she was going to give up peacefully, she would then drive off again," Smith said.
Police say the woman did let out a passenger riding in the SUV with her before speeding back up. The woman eventually lost control of the SUV at the Gulf Freeway feeder road and Broadway and slammed into one of the freeway pillars holding up the freeway. She was instantly killed.
The passenger she released from the SUV was detained by police and is being questioned.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
The scene of the wreck was cleared around 4:40am.
