Joel Cox, 51, is being treated for a severe laceration to his head at Memorial Hermann Hospital. He's in critical condition and police have few clues as to where that stray bullet came from.
Cox was heading north on Veterans Memorial near West Road when he heard a loud pop, saw that his windshield had been hit and noticed blood on his forehead. Cox pulled into a nearby gas station and called his wife for help.
"The 51-year-old male had a large laceration that came from the upper eyebrow here to the back that was caused from a bullet fragment that we found in the back of the car there," said Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
No one knows where the bullet came from. Cox told investigators he saw a white van in the southbound lane of Veterans Memorial. Since that's all authorities have, they'll be checking calls for service for shots fired in the area in hopes of pinpointing a location.
