Five injured in hit-and-run accident

HOUSTON

Police say the family's car was hit by another driver on Woodridge along the South Loop near Gulfgate Mall around 10:45pm. Both vehicles were completely destroyed in the accident.

According to police, the driver in a pickup truck was heading east on the South Loop feeder road, allegedly ran a red light and plowed into an Impala that was going south on Woodridge. The driver of the Impala had the green light.

Riding in the Impala was a family of five -- a mother, her boyfriend, and three children, who we've learned are a 14-year-old girl, a 5-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy. The driver of the truck left his vehicle behind and ran off.

According to authorities, a person of interest is in custody at police headquarters. Investigators are questioning witnesses and trying to obtain more information.

Meantime, all five members of the family in that Impala are in the hospital. Incredibly, the children, we're told, have minor cuts. The mother has a broken nose and the boyfriend has at least a broken knee and fractured hip.

Anyone with any additional information on this accident is being asked to call police.
