Muleshoe Police Chief Brian Frieda tells the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that on Friday, Sgt. Steve Bartley was shot once in the side and a second shot to his chest was stopped by his bullet-proof vest.

The chief said that 35-year-old Bartley was released from a Lubbock hospital on Saturday afternoon.

Frieda says Bartley returned fired on the man who shot him, hitting the man several times. The suspect was taken to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, where the chief says he remains in critical but stable condition.
