Dad accused of beating son with electrical cord

HOUSTON

Jarel Joseph Harris, 24, is charged with felony injury to a child. According to court documents, Harris took his son to the grocery store on Saturday and became upset when the child was disobedient. The boy told police that Harris told him he would be "in trouble" and the boy became scared and ran off.

Harris allegedly punched the boy in the grocery store parking lot, and then took him home where he allegedly beat the child with an electrical wire. The boy told police his uncle was there at the time of the assault but did not call police.

Harris' ex-wife, the boy's mother, told authorities that Harris had called her on Saturday to tell her he planned to beat up their son. But when she tried to call him back several times, he never answered. She picked the boy up on Sunday, noticed his injuries and took him to a nearby fire station. The boy was later transported to Texas Children's Hospital.

Bail in the case has been set at $5,000.
