Mom accused in death of 5-year-old daughter appears in court

HOUSTON

Rosa Gonzalez is charged with injury to a child. Her 5-year-old daughter Candy Flores died in the family's southwest Houston apartment Tuesday night. Gonzalez initially claimed the girl fell and hit her head. But prosecutors say when the evidence didn't fit that explanation, Gonzalez and family members started telling a different story.

"Then told a story of long-term physical abuse to the complainant that entailed both physical violence, not feeding the complainant for days at a time, tying the complainant in a room, leaving her in a room," said prosecutor Tara George.

The charge against Gonzalez could be upgraded to capital murder depending on the autopsy results.

Gonzalez, 41, remains in jail without bond.

In civil court Thursday afternoon, Rosa Gonzalez lost custody of her five minor children. One of her daughters also lost custody of her four children.

Children Protective Services says it will not allow any of the children to be placed in other family members' homes, but is sending them to temporary foster homes.
