Fire breaks out near nuclear plant

WAKE COUNTY

The Apex Fire Department received a call about the low-burning blaze around 5 a.m.

Images from Chopper11 spotted flames on the east side of New Hill Holleman Road at Ironrod Way.

It was unclear how many acres were burned, but a North Carolina Forest Service officer said as of 7 a.m. that it may have been as many as 20 acres.

The remote fire did not threaten any structures on the Progress Energy land. Crews were able to get the blaze under control within a few hours.

Progress Energy operates the plant, which has one active pressurized-water nuclear reactor on-site. It is located about 20 miles southwest of Raleigh.
