Ajay Kumar Mangal, 24, is charged with improper relationship with a student and sex assault of a child. Mangal, who is a teacher at YES Prep East End High School, reportedly befriended a 16-year-old student in September 2011 after noticing the girl dancing at a teacher's going away party.
The girl told police that she and Mangal began talking and texting and went out to eat together. According to court documents, she says they discussed the consequences of her being underage and him being a teacher, but decided to meet on September 16. The pair reportedly had sex at Mangal's apartment.
The girl's mother became suspicious and investigated her daughter's cell phone, where she reportedly discovered emails from Mangal. The girl then confessed to her mother about the sexual relationship.
Cell phone records show approximately 900 calls and texts between Mangal's phone and the girl's phone during a nine-day period in September.
Mangal, who has been employed by YES Prep East End High School since June 2010 is in custody in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
