Updated radio system for South Texas law officers

SAN BENITO, TX

San Benito Assistant City Manager Art Rodriguez says a new digital radio system being installed at Rio Grande Valley police departments is expected to improve communication.

The Rio Grande Valley Communications Group and the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council are using $6.5 million in government grants to fund the upgraded system for public service agencies. Pilar Rodriguez with Valley Communications Group, which includes cities in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties, says the system will provide a common channel for talking.

The Valley Morning Star reported Sunday that the digital system will replace an outdated analog operation in places like San Benito.

Further details on specific law enforcement agencies weren't immediately available.
