HISD board meets on magnet programs

HOUSTON

Trustees want a district-wide magnet policy with standard admission procedures and new rules for starting and ending magnet programs. Currently each school has its own policy.

Earlier this year, an audit suggested closing many unsuccessful magnet programs, but that was met with resistance from parents.

HISD has 114 magnet schools. The program costs about $30 million a year, and about a third of that money is spent on busing students. Today's meeting does not affect the Vanguard program for gifted students.
