Father charged in baby's death

HOUSTON

On November 4, Angel Alfredo Gamez, 26, was caring for his three-month-old daughter while his common-law wife, the baby's mother, was working an overnight shift. The mother told a Harris County Sheriff's deputy that the baby was awake and Gamez was feeding her when the mother left for work.

The baby was sleeping when the mother returned home at 4am, and by 10am she found the baby unresponsive and called 911.

The autopsy of the baby concluded her death was homicide, with the cause of death being trauma to the brain. Doctors say her injuries were consistent with having been shaken. Her mother said she had no pre-existing health conditions.

Deputies say Gamez initially denied shaking the baby, and offered several suggestions for how the injuries may have occurred. He later said that the baby had vomited and he repeatedly shook her in an attempt to keep her from vomiting again.

Gamez has been charged with felony murder. No bond has been set in the case.
