Deputy involved shooting in strip mall parking lot

HOUSTON

Deputies were responding to a call of a robbery in progress at the EZ-Pawn in the shopping center on Uvalde at Wallisville at about 3pm. Deputies say the suspects were leaving the pawn shop and as they entered their vehicle, the dye pack inside the bag of money exploded. The suspects dropped the money and tried to pull away in their vehicle.

"Two deputies attempted to take custody of the suspects while they were in their vehicle. At that time they pulled forward -- one of them armed with a pistol -- pinning our deputy between the suspects' car and another car there. The deputies, fearing for their lives and the safety of the other deputy, fired shots into the car, striking the suspect in the passenger (seat)," Dep. Thomas Gilliland with the Harris Co. Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the suspects fled the scene then bailed from the vehicle. Two suspects were taken into custody at that point. A third suspect went north in the parking lot and was taken into custody near the FoodTown.

One suspect sustained wounds in the hand and elbow. The other suspect sustained a non life-threatening injury in the upper torso. They were transported to an area hospital.

The deputy who was pinned between the cars was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but is said to be doing OK.
