Hobby Airport renovations may mean delays for travelers

HOUSTON

Barricades and signs have been set up since the weekend at Hobby. The Houston Airport System says the upper level ramp will be closed as crews replace the pavement.

It's all a part of a multi-million dollar pavement replacement project that will lead to the closure of the current vehicle entry ramp for departarting passengers heading to the ticketing counter.

That ramp will be closed at least a year while renovations are being done. Traffic will be re-routed through the second level of an attached parking garage, which will eliminate curbside drop-off for everyone except disabled passengers.

The passengers will have to use a crosswalk to get to the terminal.

Drivers picking up passengers are encouraged to use the passenger pick-up waiting lot along Airport Boulevard.

The road was built 50 years ago and hasn't been upgraded in two decades. The closure begins at 9pm.

The following information is from the Houston Airport System website regarding the closures

Curbside Check-Ins
Curbside check-in will still be available to Southwest Airlines customers. The entire operation will be relocated to the ground level floor, which is home to the baggage claim operation.

Passenger Drop Offs
The location of the Passenger Drop Off area for all airlines will be moved to a new area. Vehicles carrying departing passengers will be rerouted into the second level of the attached parking garage. Drivers will be able to stop momentarily while passengers gather their traveling items, but the entire process will take place slightly further away from the curbside area. Passengers dropped off in the garage not utilizing curbside check-in will use a crosswalk on the east side of the parking garage transitioning to the main terminal lobby area. During future phases of construction, specific crossing areas and accessibility may change periodically.

Passenger Pick Ups
Drivers who are on-site to pick up arriving passengers are encouraged to use the Passenger Pick Up Waiting Lot located off of Airport Boulevard. The lot allows drivers to park and wait for the arriving passenger free of charge. For a map, please visit fly2houston.com/PickUpLot

For ADA Passengers or in need of wheelchair assistance
Drop offs and pickups involving wheelchairs will take place in a designated lane found closest to the terminal facility. Signage will direct drivers to the Level One location.
