Mayor to ask Council to save Cage Elementary

HOUSTON

Throughout the summer, we followed the fight to save Rufus Cage Elementary School from demolition. Mayor Annise Parker says this week she will ask the City Council to buy the historic school from the Houston Independent School District.

The district would give up the property in exchange for a $100,000 credit to obtain city right of ways or other property.

"We will landmark the facility and make it a protected landmark so we can preserve the facade and the building," Mayor Parker said.

The mayor says the city will have to stabilize the building before raising money to restore it.
