I-10 construction causing weekend traffic mess

HOUSTON

State officials have advised drivers hoping to use the westbound lanes from Mason Rd. to Katy Fort Bend County Rd. to take an alternate route, and they have set up detours.

Still, we found cars backed up for miles on the Katy Freeway frontage road. It's a serious situation frustrating many drivers.

"We were in the far left lane, and we sat for like 20 minutes in just one spot," Cherie Staples said.

The Texas Department of Transportation says closing the eastbound and westbound mainlanes of I-10 between Mason Rd. to Katy Fort Bend County Rd. was necessary this weekend because contractors are on the highway hanging steel bridge girders.

It's part of a $30 million project to connect I-10 with Texas 99.

Drivers are dealing with several detours in the area.

"You know, middle of rush hour on Saturday, you know people got things to do, better things with their life than sitting 20-30 minutes in traffic in one spot," Johnathon Staples said.

The good news is the eastbound lanes opened early Saturday as contractors finished work sooner than expected, but the westbound lane closures will continue through 5am Monday.

TxDOT is asking all drivers in the area to be patient. They say traffic is not flowing smoothly, but it is flowing.

You can also expect delays in the Texas Medical Center as crews work to build a new bridge this weekend. Fannin is closed in both directions at Holcombe until Sunday at midnight. Also, because of this closure, the METRO rail will be suspended in the area. They'll be using buses to help transfer people around the closure.
