Police: Woman left baby in store parking lot

HOUSTON

Chanta Johnson, 30, is charged with child abandonment. According to court documents, back on September 18 at around 2pm, she left her five-month-old daughter, who was in her car seat, in the parking lot of a store in the 3200 block of Burkett.

A witness saw what happened, picked up the baby and found Johnson at a nearby basketball court. According to court documents, when the witness approached Johnson, Johnson told her that she didn't care what happened to the baby and didn't care if the witness contacted CPS.

The witness reportedly took the baby home with her and called police.

Police say the witness later contacted a friend and the pair went back to the basketball court to speak with the mother. They say the baby was crying and they needed diapers and milk.

They asked Johnson if she's going to take the child, to which, according to court documents, she replied, 'No.'

Investigators also spoke with Johnson's son, who told them that his mother left the child in the parking lot, saying she didn't want her anymore.

Johnson is currently in jail on a $20,000 bond.
