Websites to recover important documents

Thousands of families have lost everything because of the fires and as they begin to recover, FEMA is trying to make that process a little easier.

It's reminding Texans that if you lost important documents like birth certificates, Social Security cards and tax records, you can get another copy.

Below is a list of websites that can help you get new copies.

Texas birth certificate: call the Texas Department of State Health Services -- Vital Statistics unit at 888-963-7111, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT, or visit for more information.

Social Security card: call the U.S. Social Security office at 800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT. For TTY call 800-325-0778, or visit for more information.
